Washington Park

A walk on the famous Wildwood Trail through Washington Park is a reminder of what's so wonderful about Portland. What other city would have a forest path from a zoo to a mansion with a mountain view?

About the Hike: Portland's Wildwood Trail is more than 30 miles long, but this relatively short loop gives you a good sample of its charms. The hike starts and ends conveniently at the Washington Park MAX light rail station between the Oregon Zoo and the World Forestry Center.

Willamette Pass

Terrain: 6,683-foot top elevation, 1,563-foot vertical drop
Lifts: Seven chairlifts, including a new six-person lift; tubing hill
Nordic: Full Nordic center, with 20k groomed track: snowshoe rentals and lessons
Highlights: Willamette Pass serves Eugene and the upper Willamette Valley but also is attractive for traveling skiers because of the variety of lodges nearby. With some of the steepest terrain in the state, Willamette Pass has enough variety that skiers of moderate ability can find easy ways down from the upper lifts.

Winter in Oregon

When I was 8 years old my aunt and uncle took me to Hoodoo and introduced me to the great sport of skiing. I've been under its spell ever since. In the succeeding winters, I spent as much time and money as I could afford enjoying the pleasures of Oregon mountains and snow.

Today, years later I must add, snowsport enthusiasts no longer comprise just Alpine schussers, but Nordic cross-country devotees, snowboard fanatics, snowshoe adventurers, winter campers and just about anyone else who revels in the pleasures of the winter wonderland.
