Goody's

Goody's is a family run tradition of handmade chocolates, candies and ice cream. First created by Marne and Marion Palmateer in Sunriver, in 1984, Goody's Candy Store very quickly became a legendary and loved Central Oregon tradition selling assorted candies purchased for resale.

Hamley's Steakhouse, Café and Store

It’s easy, driving along in your car, to completely miss the Western experience that is Pendleton.

If you don’t visit during the Pendleton Round-Up, it’s easy to visit the museums, visitor centers and businesses and totally miss the old western vibe the community offers.

That is, if you don’t visit Hamley’s.

Harry and David

A long-time Medford and Rogue River Valley business that not only grows pears and peaches, but is one of the largest United States mail order companies. Started in 1934 as a catalogue company, Harry & David now has stores around the U.S. and offers a tour of their facilities.

Lillie Belle Farms

The chocolate store, located on Highway 99, or North Front Street in Central Point, opened its current location a few years ago to take advantage of what business owners in the area call an “artisan grouping.” Lillie Belle is located next to Rogue Creamery (who built the building for him) and it has big windows where you can watch Shepherd make his confections.

Little Mexico in Woodburn

Mexican flavor, north of the border

Sometimes you just feel like leaving behind the drudgery of work, closing those books and fleeing the office for mañana-land, eating some ceviche and washing it down with a cold cerveza. And you know all it takes is a drive south.

It is not as far as you may think; you can get a taste of old Mexico just 30 miles south of Portland, Oregon. Woodburn, an unassuming town in the heart of Marion County, offers the charms of south of the border without venturing far from the metropolitan area.

Nye Beach in Newport

Sometimes the best finds are ones that are off the beaten path.

Nye Beach in Newport is one of those finds.

While hundreds of thousands of tourists and locals scour Highway 101 for the perfect spot, one of the best places to enjoy everything from dining to shopping to beach access is just a few blocks off the highway.

“A lot of people know about us,” said Berniece Hammon of the Nye Beach Merchants Association. “But folks from out of town might not get down here and they will really be missing something if they don’t.”

Once Upon A Breeze

Like any good entrepreneur,  DK Smith had an idea around 40 years ago, one that people weren’t sure was going to work.

Kites.

“When he opened the store, a lot of people laughed at him when he opened his shop,” said John Fraser, owner of Once Upon a Breeze.

The name of the shop, which opened in 1975, was the product of a naming contest in the small coastal city, Fraser said. The shop has the distinction of being the oldest kite shop on the Oregon coast, and for good reason, Fraser and his staff are experts at anything attached to a string that catches the wind.

Pendleton Woolen Mills

The fact of the matter is there just aren’t that many woolen mills – or any other type of textile mills – left in the United States.

With cheaper labor abroad, more and more companies send the work off-shore, where they can hire several workers, to one American worker.

However, there are still a few places left in the U.S. where you can see production of wool being woven into blankets, such as Pendleton Woolen Mills.
