Baked Alaska in Astoria

When you visit the Oregon Coast in the fall, you are never sure what you are going to get. Sometimes it is sunny and crisp, other times it feels like you are visiting a sponge filled with very cold water.

As luck would have it, as I visited the 14th Street Ferry Slip, it was a cloudy and windy day, however the breeze was pretty crisp, and that’s how I found my way to Baked Alaska.

Golden Valley Brewery

OK, I will be honest, I’m not a huge wine drinker.

I came from a blue-collar upbringing and wine was something that came in a box. So as you can imagine, beer is the cold adult beverage of choice for someone like me.

So when people throw terms like “flight” and “cabernet”  and “Pinot Gris” I look at them with a puzzled look – you know the one, the look your dog gives you when he can’t figure out what you want him to do.

I live in the Yamhill Valley, wine country, but as luck would have it, this is also “beer country.”

Hamley's Steakhouse, Café and Store

It’s easy, driving along in your car, to completely miss the Western experience that is Pendleton.

If you don’t visit during the Pendleton Round-Up, it’s easy to visit the museums, visitor centers and businesses and totally miss the old western vibe the community offers.

That is, if you don’t visit Hamley’s.

Historic Butteville Store

Their menu varies monthly to provide farm fresh produce from the French Prairie. But, one thing you can always count on is our delicious homemade soups, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. Stop in for a slice a pie made with fresh local fruit, a Tillamook ice cream cone or a fresh fruit milkshake. Their friendly staff always does their best to make you feel right at home.

Newmans at 988

I must have driven by Newmans 988 in Cannon Beach more than 200 times during my visits to the Oregon Coast. It’s so easy when you are at the coast to hit the food staples, of the crab shacks and long-time restaurants like Mo’s.

What I had missed in the little yellow farmhouse along Hemlock Street was some of the best food I have ever eaten.
